Engstroms book "Danish West Indies Mails" illustrates the only known intact cover to have been canceled on St. Jan - March 27 1903.
The recipient of the cover below was Mrs. Zielian at Cruz Bay - the wife of the Postmaster at St. Jan - Sophus Emil Zielian. He was first and foremost the "Landfoged" (County sherif) of St. Jan which besides being the Postmaster included being police officer and Judge. Mr. Zielian was also chairman of the Colonial Council. HISTORICAL NOTE ON MR. S. ZIELIAN - POSTMASTER OF ST. JAN 1898-1910
This note was in the St. Thomas Bulletin June 7 1910. His Majesty the King sanctioned expenses for a medical treatment in Denmark for Mr. Zielian - but unfortunately Mr. Zielian died at sea on his way to Europe June 1910.
From September 1910 the Post Office of St. Jan became a small office subordinate to the St. Thomas Post Office.
